This stage involves meeting with the client to determine the project's scope, purpose, and functionality. It also includes an existing conditions survey, compiling existing drawings, and a statement of probable construction costs.
At the end of this stage, the owner decides whether to proceed with the project.
During this stage, the design team creates rough sketches and drawings to illustrate the project's essential ideas. They also conduct an initial analysis of local compliance and rules. Deliverables at the end of this stage include floor plans, building elevations, a building cross-section, and a typical wall section.

Deliverables in this stage include fully annotated floor plans and elevations, wall and window identification, and detailed notes for plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and structural plans.
